Apan

Animated stageset

Plot:
The Dance Performance "Apan" (The Monkey) by HDN Studio premiered in 2017 and has been touring since then.

Idea:
To design and create a consistent animated set that could change between different times of day and varying weather conditions. An animated monkey plays a central role in the performance.

Process:
The main stage is a clearing in the jungle where flowers bloom and butterflies, elephants, monkeys, and caterpillars pass by. I used photographs as references for the natural details and transferred the shapes onto watercolor paper in different colors. The scene is built in After Effects, and all the details can be animated and modified separately. The monkey and other characters were hand-drawn, photographed, and separated into layers in Photoshop. We rehearsed animations, music, and choreography simultaneously to find interactions between the projected set design and the events on stage.
