Plot:
Idea:
To create an animated stage set for the musical "Tummelisa" at Örebro Länsteater. The main focus was on the old oak tree where the Mole resides and how the stage changes from day to night and across the different seasons. The play begins with an animated flight through the woods as Butterfly and Tummelisa arrive at the oak tree for the first time.
Process:
I started by creating a digital version of the oak and its immediate surroundings using drawings and photographs. The scene was assembled in different layers in Photoshop and animated in After Effects. The work was planned in collaboration with stage set designer Hanna Cecilia W Lindkvist and director Isabelle Moreau. Some sequences were integrated with actions on stage, such as when the actor playing the Swallow transformed into an animated bird, or when an oak leaf turned into a real leaf that fell from the roof onto the stage.

”Tummelisa” (Thumbelina) by H.C. Andersen, with a libretto by Erik Norberg, is about a girl who learns to say no and take command of her own life. Against her will, she ends up in the vast woodland and world of animals. There, the swallow becomes her friend, and when winter arrives, the rat promises to take care of her if she agrees to marry the ruler of the woodland—the old and creepy Mole. When the Mole announces his intention to retire to the underworld for good and bring his young bride with him, everything comes to a head...
